I couldn’t talk to my friends about racism. Not because we had differing opinions, but because we didn’t share the definition of the word. Every conversation was an argument, and not a productive one. This is exacerbated by online conversation, where the typed word has no rhythm, tone, or personality. Arguments devolve to semantics or name calling with the quickness.
I spent 2016 reading online article comments to find words that don’t work anymore for various reasons. Inspired by George C. Wolfe’s The Colored Museum, I chose 11 words and wrote a play about how they died, and made rap songs to bring back the rhythm and tone to hopefully lay down a beat for us all to vibrate to again. Maybe then we can cobble together a 1000 words that do work so we can all see the same picture.
