Interpreting the word “Miscegenation” in The Online Series

I’ve spent the last 10 years learning and exploring my artistic practice while living through a life of consistent change. 

As a human that identifies as Black, Woman, and Queer, it’s impossible to divorce my life or art from the politics of these identities. The challenge I find myself finally over coming with my art is with  the balance and purpose of its creation. Having the ability to articulate the how and why of this intimate process of mine. Until this project, my visual art was mostly an extension of my anger and silent simmering rage. Researching miscegenation at the same moment in my life when I am beginning to research my ancestry on a genetic level. When I was 10 years old, mu grandfather, the man who introduced me to art as a child, died after years of suffering. About a year later, while cleaning out his office papers and other things he left behind, my mother found adoption papers with her name and birthdate on them. She found out she was adopted and had had her name changed when my grandparents adopted her. 

Now that the world is in a stand still, she and I are separated by an ocean and federal mandates, I started exploring my own genetics. The results of my DNA test weren’t too surprising. I am majorly of some African descent, about
